At St George Preca, learning and teaching experiences associated with science nurture students’ natural curiosity and wonder. Opportunities are provided for students to develop an understanding of scientific concepts and processes and how these apply to our lives and the world in which we live. Learning experiences endeavour to support students in developing an appreciation of the contribution that Science has made to our culture and society. Learners are exposed to biological (eg. living things), chemical (eg. solids, liquids and gases) and physical (eg.space and earth) sciences and are encouraged to ask questions and use scientific methods to draw informed, evidence-based conclusions. Many opportunities are given for exploration, discovery and investigation in order for students to make meaning of the world around them.
EDUCATIONAL research projects
Learners in Years 3 to 6 undertake Educational Research Projects (E.R.P.s) which are based on curriculum content in areas such as Science. These projects allow each learner to make some choices about the topic that they would like to research further (based on the learning intentions) and with teacher support, make decisions about how they would like to demonstrate their understandings. They provide opportunities for learners to take responsibility, investigate, research and make choices about their learning and develop many independent work habits.
